The next hurdle is part software part hardware - the ability to play all-region DVDs. Not completely necessary, but certainly a nice thing to have. Even if I have only done it once - The Bourne Supremacy which I bought in NYC in the Summer, but t hen I got the trilogy for Christmas.

It’s more the fact that if I wanted to play a DVD that wasn’t region 2 I could. It is a laptop after all, I may travel the world now, but I won’t be able to watch DVDs outside Europe when I do.

I currently use DVDXPlayer, a great multi-region media player, for Windows only. Why is it impossible to get around this problem with Macs?

================================================

I don’t think I will find any other software compatibility problems:

Firefox - check
Photoshop - check
MSN msgr - check
Skype - check
Googletalk - check
Flickr Uploadr - check
Office suite - check

As for photo editing, I will have to teach myself a new work-flow technique - which won’t be a bad thing anyway, and I’m sure it will be nice and easy.

Not sure if VLC works on newer Macs from what I’ve read - soon find out of course.

Thanks for the tip though.

Aye, VLC outta do the trick 99% of the time.

Use Adium for messenger (& Google Talk) and take the time to make it look nice, and I’ll get you Aperture for yer phooties. Otherwise, you’ve only to ask and I’ll let you know what you need!

Is Aperture worth the effort (and expense)? I’ve been making do with iPhoto up until now. But while it’s got some handy features, it’s not brilliant.

Yes! This is what I want - debate about software.

Thanks Alan - I shall be giving everything a go and see what I like best.

i second the Adium shout… its a great wee program,

Adium rocks. VLC works great under Leopard on an Intel mac. And MacTheRipper is your friend. For uploads, Cyberduck has always done me right.

How how how do you get VLC to play multi region DVDs with an Intel mac on Leopard????

I can’t figure it out at all! Please someone tell me. Put the disc in the drive then what? I open VLC, try to open disc and use the DVD setting and then… nothing. No error message, no movie… not even tumble weed blowing in the complete nothingness. Any ideas?

and Adium is great, yes!
Transmission for torrents, it is my new toy this week.
