I think I need to see someone about my lack of sleep, or not wanting to go to sleep. I am never asleep before 1:30 anymore, yet I have to get up at 7:30 6 days a week.

Hi, my friend Robin said you had some questions about Multimedia in DCU. I’m just finishing second year.

It’s a really good course, I love it and so does pretty much everyone on the course. It’ll be tough to get a job at the end, it’s mostly down to who you know, but if it’s what you want to do, definetly do it.

In first year you do basic projects in:
# sound editing (u make a radio programme)
# video editing (3 minute video clip promoting anything u like)
# imaging (photography, editing photos, and creating graphic images)
# Web design
# Some irrelevant sociology, film studies, technology info, and general media studies which slightly annoying but not too hard.

The course has changed to 3 years now instead of 4, but that’s what I did anyway. We only had 10 hours a week, 5 of which were on Monday, and Friday’s off, so first year is really easy. You don’t get projects until 6 weeks into the course, and you usually don’t start them until week 10, they’re due week 12. Only one exam at christmas, but alot of small projects, individual and group.

Second year you choose to specialise in either sound, imaging, or video. Again, it’s only about 12/13 hours a week, with Wednesday’s off for me. You learn alot more about whichever software specialises in that type of editing. I chose imaging, alot of graphic projects. Video and Sound were just production of video and sound projects using the equipment and software. Aswell as your speciality, you learn basic animation in Macromedia Director. You study more irrelvant stuff about society and the Media that you already know. And alot of web design (Dreamweaver and Notepad.

It’s an amazing course, and I’d definetly reccommend it. It’s basically all the aspects of craetive advertising.
Sound, Video, Imaging, Web Design, Animation.

For specific information go to http://www.dcu.ie and look up the course modules in the Prospectus.

Hope that helps. good luck!
